ABOUT DR. MICHELLE MACKAY PATEL

Believing in the Human Body
Growing up I had never heard of Naturopathic Medicine and like many grew up with conventional medicine. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, because of my fascination with the human body and this deep desire to help others. Being privileged enough to study at the University of Waterloo I learned how the human body moves and fell absorbed by the complexity in our brain. I needed to pursue this further and completed a research-based Master’s degree focused on neuroscience and neuroplasticity. Something about the central nervous system’s ability to adapt even in the worst circumstances struck a nerve (no pun intended) and that translated into a broader interest in the body healing itself. I don’t know if I ever always aligned with using drugs as the primary method for healing, personally I rarely took them myself and always focused on a healthy lifestyle. A random Google search changed the direction of my life and after several years of rigorous training, I’m so glad that I believed in the human body.
One of the Naturopathic Doctor’s Principles is to teach others and this resonated really well with how I think most clinicians should operate. I never enjoyed going to the doctor and feeling that I wasn’t the centre of their care. Focusing holistically on my patients and teaching them about their body will be parts of my lifelong commitment to healing others.
